(Re)Discovering Segantini

On the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to Giovanni Segantini, curated by art historian Prof. Niccolò D’Agati and hosted at the Museo Civico of Bassano del Grappa from 25 October 2025 to 22 February 2026, the Lambda team carried out an in-depth scientific investigations on several key works by the artist, including Ave Maria a trasbordo and Ritorno dal bosco.

Imaging XRF and FORS analyses, conducted by Prof. Anna Galli and Dr. Simone Caglio, revealed aspects of Segantini’s painting technique that are not visible to the naked eye, providing new insights into the materials and execution processes adopted by the artist. In the case of Ave Maria a trasbordo, the investigations also led to the identification of an underlying painting, attributed to Segantini himself and previously believed to be lost.
A similar approach was applied to Ritorno dal bosco, where spectrographic investigations revealed the presence of an earlier pictorial composition, significantly expanding our understanding of the artist’s creative process and highlighting the value of non-invasive diagnostic techniques in the study of artworks.

A dedicated focus on the artwork and the scientific analyses is available on the Rai Cultura website, together with further insights into the exhibition and its curatorial project.
